What Is Stone Coated Steel Roofing Tile?

Stone-coated steel roofing tile, also known as stone-chip roofing or stone-coated metal roof tile, is A roofing material that combines the durability of steel with the aesthetics of stone. It consists of a steel base coated with a layer of stone granules or chips, which are then fused onto the metal substrate using an adhesive. If you’re looking for a roof that can withstand nearly anything Mother Nature has to offer without sacrificing style, then stone coated metal roofing is the best choice for you. As a professional supplier, Wanzhi has always been pursuing excellence in quality. Welcome to contact us.

The stone-coated metal roofing manufacturing process

1. Material Selection: GL steel, or GI sheets are typically used as the base material for stone-coated metal roofing.

2. Coating: Apply the adhesive evenly to the primed metal plate using a roller, spray, etc.

3. Stone particles: Sprinkle the stone particles evenly on the metal plate coated with adhesive, and then press them into the adhesive with a roller or machine.

4. Quality Control: Strict quality inspection, defective panels must be removed.

5. Finishing: The edges of the roofing sheets may be trimmed or finished to remove excess adhesive or granules.

6. Packaging and Shipping: Use standard packaging for stacking for storage or transportation.

How does stone coated steel roofing differ from industrial metal roof?

Stone-coated steel roofing is a type of metal roof that has its own unique advantages in addition to the characteristics of industrial metal roofing, including:

1. Improved energy efficiency: Infrared pigments embedded in the stone coating increase the natural solar reflectivity (i.e. energy efficiency) of the metal roof.

 2. Reduced noise: Wanzhicai stone steel roofing profiles do not require additional sound insulation materials and remain quiet even on rainy days due to the sound-absorbing pads of the granular stone coating.

3. Color diversity: The stone coating process can achieve a variety of colors and textures, which can replicate the appearance of traditional roofing materials such as asphalt shingles, clay tiles, and wood shingles.

How does Metal Roofing weigh in compared to traditional roof materials?

1. Metal Roofing: Weighs up to 1.6 lbs. per square foot

2. Wood Shingles/Shakes: Weighs up to 4.5 lbs. per square foot

3. Asphalt Shingles: Weighs up to 4.3 lbs. per square foot

4. Clay or Concrete Tile: Weighs up to 6 -11 lbs. per square foot

As you can see from below, metal roofs are lightweight, but despite being one of the lightest roofing materials, metal’s inherent properties allow it to withstand nearly anything Mother Nature throws at it, including hail, hurricanes, tornadoes, and fire.

Stones in stone coated steel roofing tiles

The stones in stone colored steel roof tiles are called roofing granules. These granules are made from natural stone and then crushed into various sizes. When choosing granules, you need to pay attention to the following points:

  • Hardness
  • Opacity to solar ultraviolet light
  • Chemical and physical inertness to provide resistance to acid rain and leaching
  • Durability to freeze/thaw and wet/dry cycling
  • Minimal oxidation and rusting (iron content)
  • Low porosity
  • Suitability for coating
  • Particle shape

Wanzhi strictly selects high-quality stone particles and uses advanced machinery to apply the pigment mixture to the stone particles and then bake them at high temperatures. We use a spectrophotometer to read the color multiple times at different intervals. And perform color fixation tests to ensure that the color remains stable over time.

How Long Does Stone-Coated Metal Roofing Last?

Stone coated steel roof tiles have a lifespan of 40-70 years.

They will not crack, curl, or rot in extreme climates. Not only that, its color can remain unchanged for many years. What’s more, its maintenance cost is very low. You can absolutely walk on it, not only because it is strong and durable, but also because its installation method also improves its walk score.

What Is Stone Coated Steel Roofing Tile?

It is a tile pressed with a steel sheet as base material. The layers include galvanized steel, epoxy primer, acrylic resin adhesive, colored sand chips, and a layer of colored acrylic glaze coating on the surface.

1. Substrate: Galvalume or galvanized plate. The coating composition of GL Steel is 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon. They all have excellent corrosion resistance. Also, they have high strength, good adhesion, and machinability.

2. Color Stone Granules: They are made of basalt particles through the coloring process and high-temperature sintering. The stone chips on the surface serve as a decorative layer, which has vivid colors and distinct textures. Meanwhile, it can give further protection to your roof because it is resistant to ultraviolet rays.

3. Acrylic Resin: This is the key material for bonding steel sheets and colored sand. When it is applied to the surface of the material, it also acts as a protective layer for stone chips to prevent rainwater from leaking. It is also not afraid of high temperature exposure and extends the life of the colored sand.
